What this tool does

Fifteen areas rated across bookkeeping, job costing, work in progress, cash forecasting, fleet and equipment cost. The reporting a growing trades business needs, returning a stage and the gaps to close first.

How to read the result

  • Job costing is the dividing line in this trade. Without it, everything downstream is an average.
  • Jobs started and not finished and retainage are where profit hides on a cash-basis P&L.
  • Collections deserve their own rating. Revenue you cannot collect is not revenue.
  • Fleet and equipment cost per revenue dollar is the check most businesses never run.

Questions we get asked

What is the most common gap?

Job costing that lives in a spreadsheet, so the report has to be rebuilt by hand every month and eventually is not.

Do I need work in progress accounting?

If jobs span month ends, yes. Otherwise a good month and a bad month are indistinguishable from the timing of your billing.

What comes after the assessment?

Fix the lowest two items that touch cash, then set the close date and keep it.

What happens next

Reading about it and having it done are different things. Here is exactly what happens if you want the second one.

  1. The call takes thirty minutesYou describe the business and where the numbers are letting you down. We give you an expert view of your situation, and what we would start with. There is no pitch deck.
  2. We look at the fileYou give us read access to the books as they are. We come back with what is wrong, what it will take to fix, and whether the answer is bookkeeping, controller work, or something else.
  3. We send a written scope and a priceIt lists what we do each month, what you get, the date it lands and the fee. We agree it before anything starts, and it does not change unless you agree.
  4. We take over the books and close the first monthWe set up access and systems and enter the opening balances. The first close lands on the date in the scope, and every one after it does too.
